visa Burma, Kyat, Dollar, Exchange Rate

Bangkok Burma Consulate Visa section is up to normal again.

Go there before 8.30 am, they open at 9, but usually there are plenty of people already waiting and they work extremely slow. If you are lucky and pay the double price you could get the visa the same day in the afternoon. But this is not for sure.

If you are again lucky you might get the visa the next day for Baht 1024,-. To get the Burma Visa after 2 days (normal) it's Baht 8xx,-

You can get tourist visa and business visa, for business visa you need a invitation letter from a Burma company, the prices range from about $ 25,- for a single entry tourist visa to us$ 200,- for a multiple entry business visa for a half year.

The usual way for a Burma Visa goes like this the visa application form checking takes from 5 to 20 minutes, elsewhere - e.g. for a Thai visa in a Thai consulate- it takes 1 minute. After the formal parameter checking is done you pay the normal Burma Visa fee or you can ask to get it quicker.

To get the Burma Visa more quick a surcharge is applied for you Burma Visa, the figures are mentioned above.

The Burma Consulate is at Pun Road Bangkok, a side road of Silom Rd. use the Plaza Hotel or Tower Hotel in Bangkok to stay, that's just nearby, go there in the morning, near the big Hindu Temple on Silom road - -the photo left is from the Hindu Temple on the corner of Silom Rd. and Pun Rd.

fill out 2 forms, fix 2 passport photos onto and get the passport with the visa back in the afternoon (theoretically, it doesn't

work anymore) This would do it just on time to go to the airport for the Rangoon flight, for this fast procedure within the same day there is a surcharge.

If you are too lazy or have a hangover from last night ask the hotel to call a service agency and they will do it for you.

If you want to go to southern Burma only you could go to Ranong Thailand, take a longtail boat to Kawthaung. In Kawthaung they give you a 2 day visa for $ 10,- you can stay a couple of days with this visa but only around the Kawthaung area, with this visa they stop you when you try to exit the Kawthaung area into further up Burma.

Well that's it until you will arrive at the all new Rangoon International Airport.

In resent years some more airlines fly out of Bangkok, Thai International and Thai Air Asia, Thai Air Asia has a very bad record in terms of delays-, don't use them unless you are a masochist. Thai International and Bangkok Air are good but always on the upper price level. MAI which translate to Burma Airways International stopped business some month ago, but is on again now -Feb 2008- now Air Bagan took over their routes, for more check Burma Airlines.

When you arrive at Rangoon Airport take your luggage - it takes a while - go out through the green channel, the custom people are very friendly - don't listen to anyone who whisper all kind of nonsense and ask for a taxi, just scream ..taxi shila.. immediately at least 5 guys will run towards you, tell them you want to go to the Queens Park Hotel a budget hotel (about $ 35,-) - or to Summit Parkview hotel (about $ 45,-) , for taxi fare not more than kyats 5000,- . If you have some more to spent go to the Kandawgyi Palace hotel -around $ 80,- but this is the most beautiful and well located hotel in Rangoon, its owned by the Bayoke Hotel from Bangkok - you know the tallest tower in Bangkok,

The exchange rate is about US$ 1 = 1200 kyats - Feb 2008-. Don't change money at the airport counter, they cheat you indirectly, since there exchange rate is about half what you get down town e.g. in Bogyoke Market.

In the Summit Parkview you can get a good room for about US$ 45,- insist on this -they will try to squeeze more- , if they hesitate go to the Panorama Hotel.

And keep in mind two things, first if you ask anything, everyone will tell you - yes- yes - but yes in Burma doesn't mean yes !! its just bla bla to keep you happy. So if its something important ask at least 3 different persons and if they all say something different have it written down and signed.

One thing on departure,

if you bought anything of value like jewelry, antiques - Burma is a paradise for antique hunters - get a receipt - no credit cards !!- , this will prevent problems at exit.... comply with the law like in any other country and you wont experience any problems.

One remark at last... stay out of politics, if you have a uncontrollable pressure to satisfy your ego on political matters go to Washington or Brussels and demonstrate against their human rights violation - for a change - and leave the Burma's alone.

On this planet there are at least 50 other countries who have a lower human right standard than Burma, but since those are friends of the US or Europeans no one bothers them.

Have a look at our golden triangle section to get some knowledge what's on this.

Well, happy holiday or vacation!
